Right on time, at the beginning of December, most areas in Germany had registered record cold temperatures.
Huge masses of fresh snow hindered the traffic across all parts of Germany. Above all in Saxony and in the north of Bavaria the motorways were forced to close for a short while on Thursday night. The A72 in Saxony also had to be completely closed temporarily due to jacknifed lorries. Intense snowfall on Thursday night also caused other impediments and accidents. Even though the German weather service (DWD) had lifted storm warnings for Lower Saxony, Brandenburg, Thuringia, Saxony and Bavaria there were still unfortunately many problems in many places.
In Saxony too, drifting snow on motorways and the major trunk roads led to problems. According to the storm headquarters at Meteomedia, a Violet storm warning was issued in some parts of Saxony; the highest alert level possible. Over 30 centimetres of fresh snow fell, and strong winds led to huge snowdrifts forming. Several lorries and cars got stuck on Thursday night. Similarly in Saxony-Anhalt, the police reported large-scale disturbances on the streets. On the A2, snow and wind caused slow traffic movement and traffic jams. In Thuringia, the A4 and A9 were also affected by the snowfall.
However, an end to the frosty temperatures is in sight. "We've left the week-end's cold weather zenith behind us" said a meteorologist from a well-known German news organisation. Milder air from the southwest is expected to spread next week.
But this will brings new problems with it. Because the snow can turn to rain. "And if the rain falls on frozen ground, there is a threat of a complete frozen sheet of ice covering the ground; so-called "black ice".
