Russia by Numbers

The EU is Russia's most important trading partner. In 2009, more than 50% of Russian exports were to the EU. The EU is also the most important investor in Russia: Over 75% of direct investments came from the member States of the Union. Commercial relations in the energy sector are especially important for both sides: The EU covers approx. 20% of its oil and approx. 45% of its natural gas requirements with Russian deliveries – and the trend is rising. From the EU, it is mostly machines and transport equipment, chemicals, agricultural products and textiles which are exported to Russia.

However, in 2009 there was a decline due to the worldwide economic and financial crisis: Exports from the EU27 to Russia rose from 23 billion euros in 2000 to 105 billion in 2008, before falling to 66 billion in 2009. Imports rose from 64 billion in 2000 to 178 billion in 2008, before falling to 115 billion in 2009. Consequently, the EU27's balance of trade deficit with Russia has clearly risen from 41 billion in 2000 to 73 billion in 2008, before falling to 50 billion in 2009. Calculations for 2010/2011 reckon with a clear increase in commercial volume.
