The speedy entry of Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen area has been delayed.
 
One reason for this is doubts voiced by the Federal Government with regard to completely abolishing passport controls on the internal frontiers. Romania and Bulgaria still have a high criminal activity rate and are still fighting against corruption. Although the situation has improved since the entry of both countries into the EU, the Federal Government believes that it is too early for the complete abolition of passport controls. They maintain that controls regarding sea and air cargo should first be relaxed.
