A freight forwarder is a service provider which organises shipping of goods.

This may involve purchasing of individual transport services but also of complete logistics services.
Thus a wide range of additional logistics services can be offered, for example services which are directly connected with the production of the company. This could also include any expenses for customs clearance or preparation of papers.

Freight forwarders can transport goods with their own vehicles or cooperate with sub-contractors.
In addition, there are freight forwarders who offer the services of a freight forwarding warehouse. Goods are therefore not stored by the dispatcher but kept in the freight forwarder’s warehouse until they are shipped.

Over the years, many freight forwarders have specialised in terms of countries and shipping methods. There are freight forwarders in the sectors of sea port, groupage, air freight, food and project transportation, to name but a few.
